Virginia Ottney

December 22, 1934 — May 12, 2024

On May 12, 2024, at the age of 89, Virginia Lee “Dee” (Carnicom) Ottney, took her lord and savior Jesus’ hand, and was reunited with so many members of her family, for a long awaited game of Carnicom Poker, tons of laughs, and eternal love.
Born December 22, 1934, in her Aunt Virginia’s residence, to Harold and Helen (Falquette) Carnicom, in Fremont, Ohio. Dee attended Fremont Ross High School and married Lawrence “Larry” Ottney on March 19, 1954. They had one child together, Kathy, who was their pride and joy.
Always a hard worker, Dee began her working career at the tender age of 14, at Schmittuz Greenhouse, making 25 cents an hour. She then went to work in the kitchen at Fremont Memorial Hospital, was employed at Quickut, then was a grinder/packer at Crescent Manufacturing, from where she retired.
In her earlier years, Dee was an avid bowler, winning many tournaments. She was an amazing cook, hosting plenty of holiday meals and Sunday dinners throughout the years, which was sure to include her signature slop cake for dessert. Traveling was something Dee enjoyed and did a lot of over the years. She attended many Country and Western concerts, seeing greats such as Charley Pride, Mickey Gilley, and her all time favorite, Conway Twitty. Dee was a loyal person, who didn’t take the term friendship lightly. She didn’t believe in sugar coating anything; thus, honesty and integrity were held in high regard with her. She was the world’s best grandmother and great-grandmother, and was extremely proud of her grandchildren. She loved going on long rides, visiting the Amish Country, and hitting up the Casino with her best friend and partner in Crime, her daughter Kathy. She took a lot of enjoyment playing euchre, especially versus her son-in-law, Mark. Dog-sitting her grand pup, Lucy, was the highlight of many of her days…gladly sharing all of her meals with her favorite furry friend.
Dee is survived by her daughter, Kathy (Mark) Garner of Gibsonburg, Ohio; granddaughters, Rachel Garner also of Gibsonburg, and Kimberly (Jason) White of Port Clinton, Ohio; grandson, Kevin (Blatney) Garner of Hanceville, Alabama; sister, Sheryl “Sherry” Stein of Fremont, Ohio; many great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her only Godson and nephew, Larry (Deb) Heberling of Clyde, Ohio.
She is preceded in death by her parents; ex-husband, Larry Ottney; and siblings, Roberta “Bobbie” Giebel, Shirley Heberling, Edwin “Eddie” Carnicom, Marilyn “Sue” Nause, Harold “Hal” Carnicom, Kenneth “Kenny” Carnicom, and Judith “Judy” Humberger. Grandsons, Justin Lee Ottney and Mark Lawrence Garner precede her as well.
Any memorials or donations can be made in her name to the Shriners Children’s hospital, specifically the burn unit.
Per Dee’s final wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral services. A celebration of life, and private graveside services will be held at a later date.
