Theodore “Ted” Herbert Gerbich, 93, of Gibsonburg, passed peacefully and comfortably Friday morning, July 24th, 2026 at Genoa Retirement Village. He was born in Gibsonburg on June 21st, 1933 to Paul and Dorothy (Doll) Gerbich.

A 1951 graduate of Gibsonburg High School, Ted participated in football, basketball, and track all through his schooling. He was the 1951 Sandusky Bay Conference 440 yard dash champion, and participated in the Ohio State High School Track Meet in the 440 yard dash and 880 yard relay.

On February 14th, 1953 he married Ruth Wasserman at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Gibsonburg. Together, they raised three children and celebrated 56 years of marriage before her passing on May 16th, 2009.

Ted was a glass worker at Libbey-Owens-Ford for 30 years. Upon his retirement in 1983, he then went on to work another 17 years as a custodian for Gibsonburg Schools, before retiring for good in 2000.

A lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Browns, and especially the Ohio State Buckeyes, Ted was a 34 year season ticket holder to Ohio State football. His fandom was in fact so devout that when one of his daughters scheduled her wedding for the Saturday of a Buckeye home game, he had to take a moment to consider what event he would attend that day. Ted was also an avid bowler, participating in a weekly league in Woodville for over 30 years. As a strong believer in serving the community he lived in, Ted dedicated many years of his life serving as a committee man for Cub Scouts, as well as the Gibsonburg Junior Baseball Association and Gibsonburg Park Board, where he played a very active role in the construction of the baseball diamond at Central Park in Gibsonburg. His greatest pleasure in life, though, was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending many of their school and sporting events over the years.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Rebecca (Mike “Chico” Veres) Gerbich of Petersburg, MI; Amy (Tim) Hogan of Columbus, OH; and David Gerbich of Gibsonburg, Ohio; grandchildren, Melody (Jay) Morelock, Matt Gerbich, Andrew (Ashley) Gerbich, Abigail (Yusef) Saheb; great-grandchildren Rebecca (Jarett) Spoores, Aubrey Morelock, Landry Gerbich and sister Joy Herman, of Port Clinton, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 29th, 2026 from 4:00p-8:00p at Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Crematory, 319 W. Madison St., Gibsonburg, OH. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, July 30th, 2026 at 10:00a at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 317 E. Madison St. Gibsonburg, OH followed by burial services at West Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Cherry Street Mission in Toledo, Gibsonburg Athletic Boosters, or Gibsonburg Junior Baseball Association.
