Obituary

Steven Clemens Szymanowski Sr. passed away the afternoon of January 6, 2026, surrounded by family.

He was born in 1949 in Fremont, Ohio, to Clemens Szymanowski and Annarose Speildenner. He grew up in Fremont with his older sisters, Ruthann and Marlene, and his younger brother, John.

Steven is survived by his wife, Anita; his children, Amy (Jesse) Wenning and Andrew (Jessica) Szymanowski; his daughter-in-law, Carrie Hart; his grandchildren, Isla, Ellie, Ethan, Erin, Stella, and Emma; and siblings Ruthann (Richard) Recktenwald, Marlene (Phil) Daubel and John (Pat) Szymanowski; along with nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his oldest son, Steven Jr.

Steven married his high school sweetheart, Anita, and they shared 54 years of marriage. Their relationship was marked by devotion, loyalty, and a deep commitment to family.

He was a graduate of Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic High School, Class of 1967. He later studied baking at the American Institute of Baking in Chicago in the early 1970s. He worked for Tony's Bakery in Fremont, Ohio, a business started by the Szymanowski family, and continued working there after it became Nickles Bakery until his retirement.

Steven loved fishing - especially for walleye, bass, and perch - a passion so strong that he famously went fishing the day his son was born. He was an avid Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians fan, faithfully followed his children's athletic teams, and found quiet satisfaction in tending his garden.

Services for Steven will be held privately in accordance with his wishes.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice, Catholic Relief Services or to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory is honored to be assisting the Szymanowski family.
