"Am, Is, Are, Was, Were are verbs" are the unforgettable words that would be energetically shouted from former beloved elementary school teacher, sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend, Sandra Kashmer, 78, currently of Findlay and recently of Helena/Fremont who passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. She was born on February 10, 1947 in Cherry Point, North Carolina to the late Edward (Muzz) and Joyce (Engler) Myslinski.
As a young child, Sandy enjoyed writing and hoped to someday become a writer. She spent her elementary school years at St. Ann's Elementary (Fremont) and graduated from St. Joseph Central Catholic High School, SJCC (Fremont) in 1965. While in high school, she was a cheerleader all four years earning herself a varsity letter. She was also a part of the yearbook staff and a cast member of the Music Man. Her Sophomore year, she was part of the royal court representing her class. Her Senior year, she was crowned Queen of the royal court. When enrolling in college, she chose Marquette University in Milwaukee to pursue a journalism degree. While at Marquette, she was bestowed the great honor of being named the Sweetheart of Sigma Delta Chi, a professional journalistic society. The selection for sweetheart was based upon "beauty, charm, personality and those qualities which best exemplify the spirit and the high ideals of Sigma Delta Chi". She missed home too much and after one year at Marquette, came home to pursue an elementary education degree at Bowling Green State University.
It was during one of her summer's in college that she met the love of her life, Thomas Robert Kashmer. They married on July 20, 1968. After receiving her education degree, she taught at her alma mater, St. Ann's, for many years teaching 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. Sandy never missed an opportunity to entertain: she dressed up as Boy George and sang Karma Chameleon at a school dance, made up the lyrics and sang "The St. Ann's Stinger" song while dressed as a cheerleader, and always was in costume at Halloween. She had many students who loved her and would lament that they became a teacher because of her. She also was the children's choir leader at St. Casmir's church playing the guitar for many years and helped to plan their Christmas performances. It was during this time that she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, which she lived with for 45 years. She did not let this diagnosis slow her down. In fact, she took it on head first. She was brave, strong, and courageous showing her students, family, and friends that if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. She continued to teach out of her "scooter" for 25 years, retiring in 1995 from Jefferson Elementary School in the Port Clinton City School District.
After retiring, Sandy enjoyed spending time with her granddaughters, being outdoors with her nature enthusiast husband, loving on her many dogs, and attending shows at the Fremont Community Theater. Whenever there was a birthday, graduation, or other event in her life, she enjoyed letting her creative juices flow to create a poem, just like her own father, for the occasion. Sandy loved to bake and her children fondly remember the smell of Nestle tollhouse cookies baking in her oven as she listened to The Brother's Four in the background. They also remember her love of arts and crafts, most specifically her commitment to make a different easter egg character every year for their Easter Egg tree. There was Mickey, Scooby Doo, Woodstock, and Garfield to name a few. Her most recent favorite pastimes were watching Romantic comedies and the Hallmark channel and playing all kinds of board games and always winning.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Tom, her brother Tom, and her parents. Surviving are her daughters, Kristi (Scott) Urig of Columbus and Kerri Kashmer of Findlay; grandchildren, Alishia (Ashley) of Findlay, Abbey and Megan of Columbus; sister, Beth (Bob) Turner of Fremont; and niece Kaitlin (Josh) Niese of Berlin Heights, and many, many family and friends.
