remont - Robert L. "Bob" Schmidt, 86, passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, December 10, 2020. He was born on August 11, 1934 in Blissfield, MI to the late Alfred J. and Viola C. (Bourbina) Schmidt.
Robert was a 1955 Fremont Ross graduate. He served in the U.S. Army during the occupation of Germany. On May 30, 1957 he married his sweetheart Shirley Ann Gabel at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
For 36 years Robert worked in numerous management positions at Whirlpool eventually retiring in 1988. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he volunteered various times throughout the years. Robert and his wife enjoyed wintering in the southwest for 22 years and liked boating, fishing, carpentry, golfing, and gardening. Robert was a proud member of the “River Rats” Club for many years where he and Gary, Mick, Bill, and Al would meet on the river every Wednesday, for breakfast and a game of cards.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley; children, Mark Schmidt of Houston, TX, Mary Lou (Michael) Jay of Fremont, Christopher (Suzanne) Schmidt of Columbus, Neil Schmidt of Clyde, Eric (Rhonda) Schmidt of Fremont, Paul (Angie) Schmidt of Fremont, and Patrick Schmidt of Clyde; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 10 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, Richard, and his sister-in-law Barbara.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church or the Croghan Street Garden Club of St. Joseph Church fund.
Visitation will be held privately. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 10 AM for all family and friends. Those attending are required to wear a mask to enter the church and are asked to please adhere to social distancing. Rev. Michael Roemmele will officiate and Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
