Philip A. Smart

July 5, 1949 – May 17, 2026

Philip A. Smart, 76, of Fremont, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2026, at Stein Hospice in Sandusky. He was born July 5, 1949, in Fremont, the son of Carl and Mary (Cross) Smart.

Phil was a 1971 graduate of Otterbein University, earning a degree in Business. Passionate about lifelong learning and his career, he also attended the Wharton School of Business, specializing in employee benefits. Phil proudly served his country as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force from January 15, 1971, to June 5, 1973.

On August 22, 1970, he married Judy Decker at Trinity United Methodist Church. The church became central to Phil’s life; he was an active member, serving as Board Chairman, Finance committee Chairman, and many other committees and activities throughout the years.

Phil's love for music resonated throughout his life. A talented singer, he was proud to be a member of both a local quartet and the church choir. Among his other passions, Phil was an avid collector of classic Mustangs, but his greatest joy was his family. He cherished every family gathering and was a constant, proud fixture in the stands, supporting his grandkids at their sporting events.
