Mercy Sister Mary Jane Magers (96) transitioned peacefully to her heavenly home Thursday evening October 1, at St. Bernardine Home, Fremont. Sister Mary Jane was one of eleven children born to Frederick and Doris (Dornan) Magers.
A native of Tiffin, she attended the aspirant school at Our Lady of the Pines before entering the Sisters of Mercy in 1948. She began her ministry of teaching after attending Our Lady of Cincinnati College. She completed her degree at Mary Manse College, Toledo. She taught in parish elementary schools in Toledo, Fremont, Upper Sandusky, Mansfield, and Columbus. Teaching was a perfect fit for her lively spirit and creativity. She delighted her students with original poems and rhymes that made learning memorable and enjoyable. In later years, she could still recall many of these verses and shared them during community talent shows.
As the years went by, her ministry evolved to caring for retired sisters at St. Bernardine Home, where she served as a nurse aide. She later discovered a special talent and passion when she completed cosmetology school and earned her license in 1979. Through her ministry of providing hair care, she brought comfort, dignity and companionship to many sisters.
When no longer able to continue that work, Sister Mary Jane embraced a quieter way of life filled with prayer, reading and bingo. She enjoyed playing the accordion and gathered a group of Sisters to form a small band for special celebrations. She loved her nieces taking her shopping – she never came home empty-handed! Deeply spiritual, Sister Mary Jane continued throughout her life to seek new ways of growing closer to God.
Sister Mary Jane was preceded in death by her siblings Evelyn, Vivian, Betty, John, Charles, Marge, Patrick and Albert. She is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Stella Magers, OSF, her brother, David, both of Tiffin, her sister-in-law, Donna, many beloved nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and her Sisters of Mercy community.
Services will be held at St. Bernardine Home, 1220 Tiffin Street, Fremont, Ohio: Tuesday, October 6, 2026 2:00 Welcoming Service with visitation until the funeral liturgy at 4:00. Burial will be at Our Lady of the Pines Cemetery.
