Lifelong Gibsonburg resident, Mary Rose Herman, 92, died with family by her side on Saturday, September 6, at St. Charles Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Gibsonburg on September 10, 1932, a daughter of Raymond P. and Hilda (Dumminger) Kirwen. Mary graduated from Gibsonburg High School 1950 and later married Robert E. Herman on September 26, 1951. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary prior to his death on December 1, 2016.
Mary’s life was devoted to her husband, family and church. She came from a family of six and raised eight children of her own. As a member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, she was also its former organist and choirs’ director, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, CCD facilitator and lay distributor.
One to always welcome company, she loved to visit, spend time with her sisters and indulge in a competitive game of cards. She enjoyed sitting on her patio watching her birds, squirrels and her flower garden. Mary’s kindness to others was contagious and is her legacy.
She leaves behind children, Deborah Reynolds, Dennis (Brenda) Herman, Diane Noss, Theresa Hilt, Douglas (Judy) Herman, Matthew (Donna) Herman and Mark (Amanda) Herman; many grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Rita Brown and Nancy Kirwen.
She joins in death her parents; husband; son, Christopher J.; infant son, John H.; sons-in-law, David Reynolds, Dale “Butch” Noss and Fred Hilt; siblings, Carol Holcomb, Margaret “Peggy” Wonderly, Raymond “Bud” and Donald Kirwen; in-laws, Charles “Chuck” Holcomb, John Wonderly, Bernadine and Marcella Kirwen; and dear family friend, Jane Karau.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 12, 4-7 p.m. at the Herman-Veh Funeral Homes & Crematory, Gibsonburg. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Gibsonburg on Saturday, September 13, 10:30 a.m. Fr. Ted Miller will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Lawrence/St. Michael Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church.
Mary’s wishes are to celebrate her life. Please dress colorful and comfortable, no ties and black apparel necessary.
