Marian Teresa Kusmer

October 3, 1930 — November 6, 2021

Marian T. Kusmer, 91, of Fremont, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2021, at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. She was born October 3, 1930, in Fremont, the daughter of Carroll and Marie (Kemp) Mayle. On May 30, 1951, she married Doyle Kusmer, who preceded her in death on July 31, 2020.

Marian was a 1948 graduate of Fremont St. Joseph High School. Upon graduation she was employed as a legal secretary then worked alongside her husband, Doyle, who operated Kusmer's Market. With her help, the store was open seven days per week, 52 weeks a year. She was selflessly committed to her family, always putting the needs of her children and husband first. Her parenting skills were developed as a teenager after the early death of her mother, assuming many maternal duties caring for her younger siblings. The ties to her family were strong. Mayleville on Lake Erie was her favorite place, not only for the views but for the company shared with generations of the Mayle family. She took immense pride in being the oldest living Mayle. Together with her sister-in-law, Eileen (Kusmer) Gabel, they organized and prepared endless holiday meals, celebrations, and family gatherings. She loved being Aunt Marian to many nieces and nephews, and she held a special place in her heart for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she loved spending time with and brought her endless joy. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, and volunteered at the Board of Elections, March of Dimes, and the St. Joseph Cafeteria where she served countless school lunches. In the weeks preceding her death, she remained active and full of life, attending her 91st birthday celebration, a visit to Mayleville, and a spirited adventure to Kelley's Island.

Surviving are her children Connie (Steve) Hodges of Columbus, Ohio; Carol (Mike) Avery of Northwood, Ohio; Ken of Indianapolis, IN; Tom (Lynne) of Port Clinton, Ohio; and Jim (Anne) of Highland Heights, Ohio; 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; siblings Joan Barr of Glen Ellyn, IL; Don (Maureen) Mayle of Westlake, Ohio; and Dolores (Wayne) Michael of Fremont. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Doyle; daughter Charlotte (Paul) Hoelzle; stepmother Katherine (Novitski) Mayle; siblings Margaret Merrill, Edward Mayle, Carolyn Vacca, William Mayle, stepsister JoAnn Hoffman, and stepbrother Don Novitski.

The family would like to thank the caring staff at Elmwood Assisted Living of Fremont and the ProMedica Toledo Hospital.
