Judy Cantrell

Judith L. (Hoy) Cantrell, 80, of Gibsonburg, Ohio passed away with her family by her side at Bay Park Hospital on Friday, May 23, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. Judy was born to John and Marge (Ottney) Hoy on Jan 17, 1945 in Fremont, Ohio. She was a 1963 graduate from Gibsonburg High School and was a lifelong resident of Gibsonburg. 

Judy was active in Cub Scouts and as a school mentor. She was best known for her hugs and her impact on children as she worked 35 years in the cafeteria at Hilfiker Elementary. Judy was a wonderful wife, mom, MawMaw and Great MawMaw. On June 1, 1963, she married her longtime sweetheart Kenny Cantrell, he survives, and they enjoyed 62 years of a happy marriage. Together, they had 3 sons. Judy enjoyed camping every summer with lifelong friends and her 6 grandchildren. An avid sports fan, Judy rooted for the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, Ohio State Buckeyes, and most importantly her Kentucky Wildcats. She also enjoyed watching her kids and grandkids in their sporting events. She was a true Golden Bear. 

In addition to her husband, Judy is survived by her sons, Jeff (Shelly) and James (Bobbi); daughter-in-law Debby; grandchildren, Jordan, Leann (Becca), James (Jessica), Patrick, Andrew (Marisa), and Abby (Tyler) Cantrell; great-grandchildren, Brady and Zoey Cantrell; sisters, Donna Gerkensmeyer, Sharon Schuett, and Roslyn Busdeker; sister-in-law, Sherry Hoy; Aunt Phyllis (Walt) Sloan; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, son Steven, and brothers, James “Moe” and Leroy “Butch” Hoy.

Visitation will be held Thursday, May 29, 2025, from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Crematory, 319 W. Madison Street, Gibsonburg, Ohio, 43431. Memorial services will take place Friday, May 30, 2025, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. There will be an additional hour of visitation beginning at 10:00 AM. Burial will be private at West Union Cemetery.
