Joan Marie Ameling, 70, of Fremont, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. She was born on July 5, 1955 in Bowling Green, Ohio, the daughter of Lewis H. Ameling and Yoland M. (Schneider) Ameling. Joan was a 1973 graduate of Fremont St. Joseph Catholic High School and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Joan spent much of her life as a bookkeeper, working many years for Great Lakes Tank & Steel and Swint-Reineck in Fremont, Ohio. A great athlete herself, she was an avid sports fan and loved going to Fremont Ross and Fremont St. Joe football and basketball games with her friends. She also enjoyed supporting her nieces and nephew while they were playing sports in grade school and high school, and it gave her such joy being able to share their accomplishments with family and friends. She never missed a single birthday, always sending a personalized card every year that arrived right on time. She was the proudest Aunt and Great-Aunt to all of the kids.
Music was another of Joan's passions. She sang in the church choir and loved to go to music concerts and shows. After Joan retired, she began volunteering and spent several years working at Share & Care where she met many dear friends. Joan had a natural way of being able to strike up a conversation with anyone she met. She took a keen interest in all events happening in and around Fremont, and her radiant smile and kindness will surely be missed by the community and all those who loved her.
Left to cherish her memory are aunt Linda (Fred) Fitzgerald of Clyde; nieces Jessica (Alan Rupp) Ameling of Perrysburg, Kristen (Ray) Robinson of Tiffin, Iowa, and nephew Michael (Amanda) Ameling of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; great-nieces Evelyn & Emma Rupp, McKenzie, Jordy, & Emileigh Robinson, Luna & Quinn Ameling, and great-nephew Anton Rupp; sister in-law Lori Ameling of Elmore; cousin Steve (Jackie) Weiler of Toledo; and many other close friends including Linda Gegorski.
Preceding her in death are her parents Lewis and Yoland Ameling, grandparents William and Virginia Edwards and John and Lillian Ameling, her brother Jerome Ameling, and many aunts & uncles who she dearly loved spending time with.
Memorials in honor of Joan may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bishop Hoffman Catholic School, or Sandusky County Share & Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 14th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan Street, Fremont, Ohio, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the mass.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Bethesda Care Center & Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care and kindness shown towards Joan during her stay.
