Gary L. Zimmerman, 79, of Fremont, passed away January 20, 2026, at Fremont ProMedica Memorial Hospital. He was born in Fremont on June 29, 1946, to George Clair and Pearl (Slaughterbeck) Zimmerman. Gary was a 1964 graduate of Fremont Ross High School. He attended the University of Toledo but was drafted into the Army on November 25, 1969, during the Vietnam War before he could graduate. Gary was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct and the Army Commendation Medal before receiving an honorable discharge on July 26, 1971.

On February 24, 1979, Gary married Ann Gillig in Tiffin, Ohio, and they celebrated 46 wonderful years of marriage before his passing.

Gary was the co-owner of Swint-Reineck Do-It-Center for many years until his retirement in December of 2009. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church, a member and past president of the Ohio Hardware Association, and a member of the Croghan Colonial Bank Board for 35 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ann Zimmerman of Fremont; children, Aaron (Amanda) Zimmerman of Columbus, Kerri (Nick) Haynes of Beavercreek, Mike Zimmerman of Columbus; grandchildren, Clay and Leo Zimmerman, Zachary and Alivia Haynes, Michael, Sara, and Hanna Zimmerman; sister, Claire Elaine Zimmerman of Fremont; sister-in-law, Rosie Zimmerman of Fremont. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Allison Mary Ann Zimmernan; daughter-in-law, May (Redding) Zimmerman; brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Mary Zimmerman; brother, James Zimmerman.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 27, 2026, from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM, with a vigil service beginning at 5:30 PM, at Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory, 900 North Street, Fremont, Ohio, 43420. A Funeral Mass will take place Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 1021 W. State Street, Fremont, Ohio, 43420. Military honors will take place at church following Mass. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Cemetery. For those unable to attend, live-streaming of services will be available by following the link on Gary’s obituary page.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Ann's Catholic Church or the Sisters of Mercy at St. Bernadine Home, 1220 Tiffin Street, Fremont, OH, 43420.
