Fidel Barrera

Fidel Vela Barrera, 80, of Gibsonburg passed away at his home under Hospice care surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019.

Born on October 28, 1938, Fidel was a son of the late Crisoforo and Elodia (Vela) Barrera.  He attended high school in Texas and was a mechanic from the age of 17.  That experience served well as he took employment with the Conrail Railroad.  He later retired from there, working as a foreman.

On September 25, 1958, he married the love of his life, Anna Mae McCoy in Fremont, OH.  They were married over 50 years until Anna’s death on March 27, 2009.

Fidel was always riding his motorcycle, especially enjoying bike runs with Grub N Suds.  He was an annual deer hunter as it was his passion for years until the onset of his illness.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going to breakfast with his long-time friend, Curtis “Frog” Malone and his son, Chris and nephew, Willy McCoy.  Fidel also attend masses at St. Michael Catholic Church, Gibsonburg.Surviving are his children Linda (Joe) Arguelles and Amy Robertson, all of Gibsonburg; grandchildren Jesse Robertson of Columbus, Anna (Alex) Turner of Fostoria, Joe, Jr. (Bonita) Arguelles of Fremont, Rachel (Mike) Mazza of NC, Brandon Bayless of FL, Crystal Barrera of Fremont and Travis Rainey of Columbus; 10 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Anna; son, Chris Barrera; and siblings, Norbert Barrera, Bertha Lopez, Alberta Barrera, Delia Hernandez and Ameila Campbell.

Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, 9-11 a.m., at the Herman-Veh Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg where Funeral Services will begin at 11 a.m.  Rev. Mark and Viola Recny will officiate.

Burial will be at St. Lawrence/St. Michael Cemetery, Gibsonburg.
