Carolyn Jane Schutt

January 14, 1941 — July 9, 2021

Carolyn Jane Schutt, 80, of Woodville, passed away on July 9, 2021 surrounded by her family. She was born on January 14, 1941 in Toledo to Norman Frank and Viola Grace (St. Aubin) Wick. Carolyn attended Whitney High School and after years of working and raising small children, earned her GED and LPN from the BGSU School of Practical Nursing. A family running joke is that Carolyn didn’t love her youngest son Joey since he was the only child that had to attend nursey school so she could attend nursing school.  In all seriousness, Carolyn was a wonderful role model for her children – stressing the importance of lifelong learning and valuing an incredible work ethic.  Over the years she cared for patients at the Luther Home of Mercy, Genoa Care Center, Mercy St. Vincent's, and retired from her nursing career at her favorite place to work, the Lucas County Corrections Center.

On June 4, 1999 she married the love of her life, Dale Schutt and they enjoyed 22 years of marriage until his passing on June 14, 2021. Carolyn will be remembered for her commitment to her church and family and her insanely funny sense of humor. She was the inventor of “Carolyn's Crap Baskets”: a Christmas tradition for her grandchildren which consisted of baskets filled with random "crap" she found at garage sales which no doubt sparked hilarious reactions and disputes to trade favorite items. She taught her grandchildren how to bake, garden, gamble, play cards, bingo and have a great time at the casino. She loved attending and volunteering at church and taught Sunday School for years in Genoa. She could often be found perusing garage sales and "digging in the dirt" as she worked in her garden. Her most memorable words of encouragement to her children and grandchildren include: knowing they could do anything, be stubborn, don’t quit, finding the joy in the small things and how to love unconditionally.

Left to cherish her memory are her seven children from her first marriage; Jane (Thomas) Wicks of Woodville, Colleen (Devin) Cable of Gibsonburg, Richard McCarthy of Woodville, Sean (Denise) McCarthy of Wasilla, AK, Laurence (Becky) McCarthy of Woodville, Joey McCarthy of Westford, MA, Nicole (Kent) Bigelow of Fort Drum, NY, 16 grandchildren and  8 great-grandchildren, close friends; Sue and Sharlene, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her grandchild, Tasha Gander, siblings; Harold and Donald Wick.

Carolyn's family would like to express their gratitude to Pastor Julie, the Heartland Hospice Care Team; Julie, Shelly, Beth, her social worker, Shelli, as well as her church and the funeral home for their continuous guidance and support.
