Barbara Schmitz

Barbara Schmitz, 89, of Fremont, passed away March 11, 2023 at her residence. She was born April 7, 1933 in Fremont the daughter of Edna Smith Boonie. 

 

On May 15, 1954, She married Ronald Schmitz at Grace Lutheran Church; he passed away on February 12, 2017. 

Barbara and her late husband owned and operated Schmitz Cider Mill and mobile home park for 43 years before Barbara retired in 2019. Barb was known around town as the "Cider Lady".

Barbara worked at Otis School in Fremont in the office and then as a recess supervisor. She volunteered at many charitable organizations, as a camp fire leader, teachers aide and was a member of Sandusky Township Volunteer Fire Auxiliary. When not at the Cider Mill, she volunteered at Coral Reef Elementary in Miami, Florida. Her dedication to children touched many lives. 

Barbara enjoyed camping and cruising with family traveling across North America, Carribean, Mexio and South America.

Surviving are children, Steven Schmitz of Fremont, JoAnn (Bruce) Gibson of Miami, FL, and Deborah Evans of Fremont; grandchildren, Cody Oakleaf, Wyatt (Angie) Oakleaf, Hayley Kay (Tim) Hay, Deena (Austin) Gannon and Jett Oakleaf; great-grandchildren, Audrey Sophia Hay, Rylee and Dakota Oakleaf; Audrey, Avery and Kayden Hay, Connor and Liam Oakleaf, Maverick Gannon. Barbara is also survived by her bonus daughter and Godchild Stacie Lowery and her children, T.J. and Tyler.


Visitation will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 from 3-8 P.M. at Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory, 900 North Street, Fremont. Funeral Services will be held on  at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church, Fremont 
where additional visiting will begin at 9:00 A.M. Maureen Pump will officiate. Private burial will take place at a later date
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Southern Care Hospice, Grace Lutheran Church or Sandusky Township Fire Department.
