Norma Heffner

December 17, 1923 — October 21, 2016

Long time Gibsonburg resident, Norma B. Heffner, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep Friday, Oct 21, 2016 at Pristine Senior Living Care Center in Fremont.

 

Born in Bettsville on Dec. 17,1923, Norma was the daughter of Martin and Mabel M. (Mathna) Carper.  She graduated from Gibsonburg High School in 1941 but only after meeting her future husband, Wayne “Pete” Heffner, during his Junior Year.  They were later married on Mar. 30, 1943 in Napoleon, OH.  Pete survives.

 

Norma was a people person with a gentle demeanor and a light-hearted sense of humor.   She had a passion for crafting, reading and knitting.  She was a regular patron of the Gibsonburg Library.  She made mittens, sweaters, afghans and baby items for family, friends, and neighbors.  She worked as a store clerk for the former Wichman Shoe Store owned by her step-father Harold Wichman and also at Lions’ Dept. Store.   Area residents will recall her teaching craft class; serving as a Den Mother of the Cub Scouts; a member of Friendship Club; a Past President of the Gibsonburg American Legion Ladies Auxiliary; and member at Trinity United Methodist Church, Gibsonburg.

 

Surviving in addition to her husband are sons Wayne (Joan) Heffner of Bellevue, NE and Jon L (Linda) Heffner, Sr of Toledo; four grandchildren, Jackie, Tony, Jon, Jr., and April; eight great grandchildren; and sister Marilyn (Wichman) (Peter) Vercellino of Gwinn, MI.  Numerous extended family nephews and nieces (Gnepper, Goetz, Heffner, Krotzer, Wohlmuth; and Mathna and Vercellino).

 

Visitation will be Wednesday, Oct. 26, 3-5 & 6-8 p.m., at the Herman-Veh Funeral & Cremation Services, Gibsonburg, where Funeral Services will be Thursday, 11 a.m.

Burial will take place in the Veterans’ Section of West Union Cemetery, Gibsonburg.

 

Memorials may be directed to the Gibsonburg Branch of the Birchard Public Library.
